Make sure the floor is visible for at least 6-18 inches all the way around the room. This will determine the size of your dining area as well as the supporting furniture. Here's a good rule of thumb for choosing the right size carpeting for your dining area. Add 20-30 inches to the length of your dining room table.
Start by selecting a larger area rug, with either no pattern or a small scale pattern, as the base layer, preferably in a neutral color or natural fiber. For example, a sisal rug can serve as a durable and neutral colored foundation. On top of the base rug, add a smaller rug with a bolder pattern or color scheme.
Bare Walls. A good rule of thumb is to hang art so that its midpoint is between 57 and 60 inches from the floor. Aim for the lower end of the range if most members of your household are on the short side; in rooms with ceilings higher than eight feet, artwork can be hung a little higher than 60 inches off the floor.

A rug should be a minimum of 70cm (28 inches) larger than your dining table on all sides. This will allow enough space for your chairs to be pulled out so that they remain on the rug at all times (nobody enjoys sitting on a wobbly chair leg). If your space is small, bench seating could be a great option.
